Alright, I'm on to my next painting and as usual, the process starts with manipulating images. As this painting is part of the Master's Technique classes at Perth Art Academy, I am primarily focussing on portraiture with landscape/architecture as the secondary focus. This project in particular I wanted to make more personal as I wanted to paint my husband and create a composition that reflects him and his cultural background. The image below is the manipulated image I created.
This composition has a mix of recent photographs I have taken of Italy and my husband and older photos from the internet. The reason I have engaged in both the new and old is due to a culture that has been carried over for many generations. If you know about psychology, the influences in your life such as cultural traditions and beliefs, make up the identity, behaviours and functions in society, you think is your own. These generational 'norms' are handed down until there is a Self investigation or enquiry into these said ideals.
This composition is attempting to engage, from the perspective of someone who grew up with similar cultural ideals, in recontextualising a constructed identity by constructing the identity. It is ripping apart relative images and collaging a story together. So in effect, it is exploring the act of creating that very identity.
Take a look below at my current painting process.
